Several reasons.
Most important one: data structure. By having its own address book, smartLookup can use the same data model as Plaxo contact cards.
Second reason: support for Plaxo folders. Mobile phones natively have only one address book. Each folder at Plaxo is, in essence, a separate address book. Therefore, only one folder could be synchronized with a mobile phone.
It depends on the make and model of your phone, and smartLookup settings. Based on some benchmarks, a contact list of 250 contacts may require between 15 and 30Kb of internal memory.
